Bonding Dinners, Day One: Two Plates in Neutral Territory

New foster girl home yesterday, and tonight was dinner date number two in neutral territory. This is the dinner-date diary: seven dates, plate distances shrinking, one bond forming at eating speed. Personal bonding log, not bonding advice, every pair differs; for fighting or injuries I would separate and call a vet or rescue advisor. No mutual grooming yet, but day one was never the goal. Dinner dates daily, patience always.
Dates 1-2: far plates, close watch
Date one: separate corners of the room, two plates 3 meters apart, no pressure. They sniffed, they ate, nobody thumped. Session 10 minutes, ended with both calm, I closed while ahead. Date two: neutral spot swept clean, no one’s smell on it, plates 2 meters. Two plates far apart, moved closer bite by bite, mid-date I slid each plate 30 cm inward while both chewed (the installment plan). They sniffed mid-air once, returned to plates, finished. No thumps either night. Photos: dinner date two with closer plates, side by side with no thumps, neutral territory working, day one ending calm, the gallery below in order.

Dates 3-5: the middle miles
Date three: 1.5 meters, first synchronized chewing (both heads down same rhythm, I nearly cried, logged it calmly). Date four: 1 meter, first plate-sniff swap (she tasted his pile, he tasted hers, both resumed, diplomacy via hay). Date five: side by side, 40 cm, longest session yet at 20 minutes, first shared flop six inches apart after. Short sessions grown slowly, ended on calm notes every time, the rule that carried all five dates. Still separate spaces at night, still no rushing. Between dates: scent-cloth swaps (each sleeps near the other’s cloth, both unbothered), shared hallway patrols at distance.

Dates 6-7: almost bonded
Date six: shared plate test, one big pile center, both ate shoulders nearly touching, 15 minutes, zero tension. Date seven: grooming watch, no mutual grooming yet, but synchronous flopping twice and one 10-minute side-by-side loaf that felt like a promise. Other bonding houses say the same: day one going great is normal, and slow session growth is the trick. We went from short dinners to longer evenings across the week: 10, 12, 15, 20, 20, 15 (shared plate), 25 minutes. Foster-to-bond feels less scary with a sheet and a schedule. Next: supervised daytimes, then the shared-space trial. The plates did the talking; patience did the rest.
Bonding playbook: rules that carried seven dates
Rule one: neutral ground every time, swept, unscented, same room corner that belongs to neither. Rule two: end on calm, sessions close at the best moment, never after the best moment (two overlong dates in month one taught this; both ended with a thump each). Rule three: plate math, start far, close 30 cm per date max, shared pile only after side-by-side success. Rule four: nights separate until daytimes are boring, togetherness must be dull before it is overnight. Rule five: one variable per date, new distance or new duration, never both (date five broke this with side-by-side plus 20 minutes and wobbled; rule reinstated). The playbook fits an index card; the patience fills the diary. Bonding is eating together at shrinking distances until distance forgets itself.
Week two outlook and foster notes
Week two plan: supervised daytimes in the neutral corner (30-minute blocks), shared hay pile as default, grooming watch continues (mutual grooming is the milestone that promotes dates to bond). Foster notes for the file: she eats confidently from day one (great sign per the rescue’s sheet), uses the corner tray already, flopped on date three (trust ahead of schedule). Resident’s report: unbothered throughout, appetite steady, territorial marking zero, the perfect gentleman hosts. If week two holds, the shared-space trial opens: daytime pen divider removed, nights still separate, camera on. Foster-to-bond with a sheet and a schedule, the sheet says 25 minutes and calm. The schedule says patience always.
Milestone watch: grooming and beyond
Grooming watch enters week two: no mutual grooming yet remains the honest line, but candidate moments multiply, simultaneous ear washes (twice), mirrored flops (three times), one nose-to-nose freeze that lasted five seconds and ended in synchronized hay-eating (filed as nearly). The milestone checklist taped to the pen: shared plate (done), side-by-side loaf (done), synchronized flop (done), mutual grooming (pending), shared hide nap (dreaming). Each gets a date when it lands. Slow session growth remains the trick that keeps working: 25 minutes now feels short, sessions end with both settled, the pen door stays open longer each evening. The bond writes itself in eating speed and flop synchrony; my job is plates, distances, and patience. Date eight tonight: shared pile, 30 minutes, grooming watch on.
Two plates tonight, one pile soon. The dates continue; the distances shrink; the diary fills. Patience always.
Plates closer nightly; grooming pending hopefully.
Date eight soon; shared pile waiting.
Patience, always.
Dinner soon.
Calm.
Soon.
