Nail Trim: Before And After (Untouchable Edition)

Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

I am Azmi, writing from Meknes, and tonight the salon is my living room floor, the client is a bun who does not like being touched, and the service is a nail trim nobody booked voluntarily. Before: talons, clicking on the tiles like small castanets. After, hopefully: civilized feet, a calmer slide across the rug, and enough loose fur harvested to knit a second bunny. Grooming time as well, fur all over everywhere. Unacceptable, necessary, and already dreaded by all parties.

Salon chronicle: the waiting area

Every salon has a waiting area, and ours is the tunnel. He sits inside it with only his nose showing, which is his way of saying he has read the appointment card and rejects it. I set out the tools early so nothing rattles mid-trim: small animal clippers, a towel for the burrito wrap, a flashlight for dark nails, treats portioned into tiny bits, and a brush for the second act. Anything involving nails, skin, or handling stress, I check with my vet here in Meknes first, and I keep sessions short and calm, stopping early whenever he tells me he is done. The goal is shorter nails, not a perfect set at any cost.

The sweet face deserves its own note, because it is doing heavy work in this salon. He has the round forehead, the soft eyes, the innocent loaf that suggests cooperation, and absolutely none of the cooperation itself. I have tried exploiting the cuteness with gentle forehead rubs before the first snip, and the effect is minimal: one second of melting, then a sharp reminder that the paws are private property. My massage notes from calmer days, which I kept in my massage notes log, help here, because the jaw-rub spots that relax him on the couch are the same spots that buy me ten seconds of stillness on the floor.

The main service: quick snips

Act one is the burrito, and I say that with full respect for rabbits who hate burritos, which is most of them. Towel on lap, bun settled against my body, one paw eased out at a time, quick confident snips off the pale tip only. On dark nails I take less than I think, leaning on the flashlight to find the safe zone, and I never chase a wriggling paw across the room. Two nails and a break beats eight nails and a meltdown. Treat bribes land between paws, not during, so chewing never coincides with clipping. When he stamps, we pause. When he grinds his teeth softly during a forehead rub, we continue. His signals run the appointment, not my schedule.

Act two is damage control, mine, not his. I keep styptic-safe habits the clinic showed me, good light, steady hands, no rushing the last paw when we are both tired. If a nail ever bled, I would call the clinic for guidance rather than improvising, because salon pride is worthless next to a sore foot. This time we finished all four feet with treats to spare, which felt like winning a small local cup. He forgave me at the speed rabbits forgive: eleven minutes of turned back, then a cautious headbutt against my ankle asking for dinner as if nothing had happened.

  • Burrito method with one paw out at a time, quick snips, treat breaks between paws.
  • Sweet face acknowledged but not relied upon, forehead rubs buy seconds, signals decide everything.
  • Fur harvest expected and scheduled, brush ready, lint roller on standby, second outfit advised.

After: sleek and furious.

Second service: the fur harvest

Grooming follows the trim because handling is already spent and the loose coat is already leaving. I brush in the direction of the fur with a soft tool, short sessions, pausing to let him shake and resettle. My brushing routine owes a lot to my grooming and shedding log, where I learned that damp hands lift more than dry force and that the pile always looks worse than it is. Tonight the pile was spectacular, a drifting cloud across the rug, enough to stuff a cushion, and he looked visibly lighter and airier afterwards, if distinctly offended about the process.

The drama crown, I should admit, does not belong to my boy alone. I have read a certified drama manicure diary and recognized every move: the flop of betrayal, the three-hour grudge, the sudden recovery at the sound of a treat bag. Knowing the performance is standard issue makes it easier to stay gentle and amused instead of guilty. Hate noted, nails done, sweet face intact, spicy soul untouched.

Checkout: before-and-after photos

The before-and-after photos keep me honest. Before: long curves catching on fleece, clicks on tile, a higher snag risk I do not want. After: neat tips, quiet steps, a rabbit who slides into his flop without hooking a claw. I file both shots in the diary with the date, so next session I can judge growth instead of guessing. Dread for the next round is already scheduled on both sides, him in the tunnel, me buying more treats, and that is fine. Talons this month, paws next, love constant throughout, and the untouchable client will, with luck and short sessions, stay just touchable enough.
