Balcony Breakfast Rabbits

Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

Hi, I’m Azmi from Meknes! On cool Meknes mornings I take breakfast to the balcony and let my rabbit explore a safe corner. I lay a mat, close the side gap, and put water and hay within reach. I sit with tea while he sniffs the railing base and flops in the sun stripe. This is my personal log, not safety advice. Balconies differ, heights, gaps, sun, wind. For my corner I show setup photos and my checklist. Short visits, same spot, quick tidy.

My balcony corner: mat, gap block, water + hay

The corner is 120 by 90 cm on the left side, away from the railing opening. I lay a 60 by 90 washable mat, push a low wooden board across the 25 cm side gap, and place water bowl against the wall plus a handful of hay on the mat edge. I sit on a low stool with tea, my presence is part of the setup, I never leave him alone outside. The rule is simple: no direct noon sun, always water, always mat. Morning slot is 8:00 to 8:25 only, March to May and September to October. In June to August I skip balcony breakfast entirely, tile inside stays cooler and sun hits the balcony floor by 7:40. That seasonal skip is marked with X in my sheet so gaps do not look like missing data.

Sniff tour is always the same: railing base left to right, board corner, mat edge, then sun stripe flop or shade sit. I log shade time and tidy time. Shade time is minutes in sun stripe versus shade, example 8 min sun, 12 min shade. Tidy time is sweep plus wipe after we go inside. I log both because wind changes both: calm days mean longer sun flop, windy days mean shade sit and more hay scatter.

How I log it

Balcony mornings repeat identically so calm and breezy days compare: out-time, sun minutes, one line. I note time, place, and what I saw. Time is out and in, 8:02 out, 8:24 in. Place is sun stripe or shade mat. Context is calm, breezy, or noisy street. Copy the log’s shape if you like, never its content, rabbits differ; my table and week photos follow.

DayOut-InSun / shadeNote
Mon8:01-8:2510 / 14Calm, flop sun stripe
Wed8:03-8:224 / 15Breezy, shade sit
Fri8:00-8:2612 / 14Calm, sniff tour long
Sun8:05-8:200 / 15Cloudy, no stripe, tidy 3 min

What my weeks showed

After three weeks, calm mornings average 10 minutes sun plus 14 shade with a flop on 4 of 6 calm days. Breezy mornings drop to 3 minutes sun, full shade sit, no flop. Tidy averages 3 minutes: sweep hay to paper bag, wipe tiles with water-only cloth, shake mat over the rail. After eating I sweep hay and wipe the tiles. The wipe matters because balcony dust plus urine splash dries fast in sun and leaves white marks, same-day wipe removes it, next-day wipe needs scrubbing. My photos show the same corner each time so I can see wear: mat edge curl by week three, board paint chip, tile grout line brightening where I wipe. I rotate the mat 180 degrees each Sunday to even the curl.

Safety habits I never skip

Friends ask if the balcony is safe, I show my setup photos and my checklist, not advice. My checklist taped inside the door: board fixed, bowl full to line, hay handful only, phone silent, stool in place, 25-minute max, never inside alone. I check the board push with one hand, if it slides, visit canceled. I check floor heat with my palm, if hot to hold 5 seconds, visit canceled. Noon visits never happen in my log. Short visits, same spot, quick tidy. Seven mornings drew the pattern clearly. Logging balcony visits? One line: out-time, sun minutes, photo. A month of mat photos becomes routine and record. That’s all this blog is, Meknes mornings, modest claims, daily notes.

Balcony shots are my own, same corner, same mat, same tea nearby. Not vet advice. Outdoor routines vary by home, supervise and adapt to your space.

Wind, dust and seasonal skips

Two wind lessons from week two and three. Wind above a light breeze cuts sun time to zero and doubles hay scatter, tidy went from 3 to 6 minutes on the windiest day when the mat lifted twice. I added a second small board on the mat edge that day and noted B2 in the sheet. From then on B2 days cluster with shade sits. Dust is second: after a dusty night tiles show footprints, so I wipe before we go out, not only after. That pre-wipe takes 40 seconds. In July and August I cancel the routine, sheet shows X for 60 days straight last summer. Inside breakfast on the room rug replaces it, same 8:00 hour, same one-line format, so the habit continues without heat risk. Pairing: balcony 8:00 sits between morning routine 7:30 and room corner 19:00 check. On balcony days the room corner stays cleaner because morning scatter happens outside. My Sunday review links all three sheets by date.
