Hat Day: One Silly Photo For The Diary
same angle, same light my log photo
Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

Some days the diary needs one silly photo. A tiny hat, ten seconds, one picture, then it comes straight off. My bunny looked deeply unimpressed and I laughed all evening. This post defends the silly photo as diary practice: why one unserious frame between forty serious logs keeps the whole record honest. Personal fun, not dress-up advice. My rule below is the entire safety system, and the hat retires after one frame.

My rule for dress-up: ten seconds, then freedom

  • Never tight, never long, photo only, a paper crown resting on top, nothing tied, nothing covering ears
  • Stop if ears go flat or they run, session ends instantly, no second attempt that day
  • Treat after, always, greens immediately, the snack tax is non-negotiable

The ten seconds ran like this: crown placed, ears swiveled once, full royal glare deployed at second four, photo at second six, crown off at second ten, parsley at second twelve. The glare is the photo, deeply unimpressed, jaw set, the look of a creature tolerating monarchy. Other houses report the same law: hats last ten seconds, the photo lasts forever. Snack tax paid in greens immediately after. Fashion icon status: confirmed for one evening.

Why the diary needs silliness

Forty serious logs, weights, tallies, trust tables, and then one crown. The silly frame does three jobs. One: it timestamps joy, the same way weigh-ins timestamp weight; future me sees April’s happiness, not just April’s grams. Two: it tests trust honestly, a bunny that tolerates ten seconds of nonsense and returns for parsley is a settled bunny, and the log may say so. Three: it keeps me writing. Diaries die of solemnity; the crown page is the one I show first and the reason the notebook stays open. One funny page between the serious logs keeps the diary honest, honest about the fact that this is love with data, not data with a rabbit attached.

House reactions, ranked

My wife: laughed until tea came out, framed the photo for her desk. Visiting cousin: demanded a turn with the crown, denied, one model only. Group chat: crown emoji storm, two friends attempted their own ten seconds (one success, one flat-ears abort, correctly aborted). The bunny: forgot within a minute, flopped, requested dinner early. Annual review: Hat Day now a standing appointment, same crown, same ten seconds, same parsley. Next year the diary gets its second silly frame. Tradition is just a joke you repeat lovingly. Photos on this page were taken by me in six seconds flat. Not vet advice, silliness with strict rules.

The crown’s biography

The crown is a paper party ring from a bakery box, gold on the outside, jam stains inside, history included free. Found in the drawer, wiped, fitted loosely over two fingers first (the two-finger rule: if it fits two fingers loosely, it rests safely for seconds). Storage: flat in the diary’s back pocket, slightly crushed, more character each year. Contenders rejected: a sock (too warm), a ribbon (too dangly), a borrowed doll hat (too tight, failed the finger test, retired to the doll). The crown won on three counts: light, loose, and ridiculous. Six-second shoot technique, for the record: phone propped on the tea box beforehand, timer burst mode, crown in left hand, parsley in right pocket, deploy-place-shoot-remove-treat in one flow. Rehearsed twice without the bunny (my wife played the model, ears held up with fingers, deeply professional). Total shoot cost: ten seconds of dignity, one parsley bunch, one eternal photo.

Annual calendar of silliness

Hat Day joins the diary’s festival calendar: New Year nap photo (January, sleeping through fireworks noted), spring’s first binky (March, dated), Hat Day (April, crowned), summer flop festival (August, flattest flop contest judged by tile coverage), Gotcha Day (personal new year, full honors). Five festivals, four serious, one crowned, the ratio holds the diary together. Friends now send their own ten-second attempts every April; the group chat hosts a yearly vote with categories (glare intensity, crown angle, treat visible). Last year’s winner: a lop with the crown slid over one ear, caption royalty-in-exile. This year’s entry from my house: the glare, ten seconds, parsley. Defending champion energy, zero training involved. Silly frames compound like interest, one a year, forever, the diary’s lightest tradition and heaviest laugh.

After-action notes from this year’s Hat Day: crown placed second try (first try slid, parsley bribe deployed mid-adjustment, protocol held), photo burst 14 frames, keepers 3, the glare present in all of them. Total elapsed: 9 seconds worn, 40 minutes of household laughter after. Cost-benefit: the cheapest page in the diary by far, the most viewed by wider margin. Next year’s crown inspection due March: check fit, check stains (jam history spreading), reinforce the weak crease with tape inside. Reign continues.

Long live the ten-second reign.

Crowned, captured, parsley-paid.

Silly forever.

Ten seconds worn, forever kept.
