The Thump Log: When Petting Stops

Thump Log When Petting Stops
same angle, same light my log photo
Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

Hi, I’m Azmi from Meknes! Case file No. 1: Tuesday, 16:40. Offense: I stopped mid-head-rub to drink tea. Evidence: one loud thump, one 180-degree turn presenting the back of the head, one pointed ear. Sentence: two-minute wind-down plus hay. Appeal: denied, the loaf held for 40 minutes. Welcome to the thump log, kept with humor and logged with timestamps. No interpretation beyond my notes: I find it funny, I write it down, I adjust my manners. For real distress signs (paired with hiding plus appetite loss) the joke stops and the vet gets called. Here: my funniest incident reports.

Case file No. 2, The Tea Interruption (repeat offender: me)

Thursday, 16:35. Same crime, same courtroom (the rug). This time I saw it coming and narrated: “drinking now, back in ten seconds.” The thump came anyway, softer, followed by a flop, verdict: protest registered but comfort kept. My table shows thumps happen most when I stop mid-session versus at the end: 9 mid-session stops drew 6 thumps, 11 planned endings drew 1. So now I end with a calm two-minute wind-down and a hay offer: rubs slow down, voice drops to a murmur, final cheek rub, hay handful placed, hands folded visibly. The folded hands seem to signal closing, thumps at planned endings dropped to zero over the next fortnight. Photos show the famous annoyed loaf pose: chin flat, eyes half-mast, ears angled back exactly 30 degrees (measured against the tile line in the photo, because of course I did).

Exhibit A, the annoyed loaf, ears at 30 degrees.

Case file No. 3, The Phone Glance (contempt of bun)

Saturday, 17:02. Mid-purr-sit, my phone buzzed, I glanced 3 seconds. Thump. Then, and this is why the log exists, he climbed back onto my foot and demanded resumption with a nose press. Sentence: phone face-down for all sits, a rule now taped to the coffee table. Thump, photo, laugh, note. That four-beat rhythm is the whole method: the thump startles, the photo catches the loaf, I laugh (quietly, he hates loud), the note takes 20 seconds. My incident table now holds 14 entries over two months, and patterns only a humor log could reveal: 6 tea-related, 3 phone-related, 2 guest-voice-related, 2 mystery (no visible trigger, logged as cold cases), 1 at the vet’s waiting room (justified, no sentence).

Case file No. 4, The Wind-Down That Worked (acquittal)

Last Sunday, full routine observed: slowing rubs from 16:50, murmur from 16:55, final cheek rub 16:58, hay placed, hands folded. No thump. He ate hay, flopped, and stayed through my entire tea. I logged it as an acquittal with a star. Friends love this log because every owner knows the offended bunny look, three friends now keep their own case files and our group chat trades loaf photos with legal commentary. Objection overruled, the court of the rug is adjourned. If you start one: time, trigger guess, pose photo, sentence. Keep it funny and keep it short, the log works because no entry exceeds two lines, and the two cold cases remind me I don’t actually speak rabbit. Loaf-pose photos taken by me post-thump, laughter suppressed. Not vet advice; humor log only.

Case file No. 5, The Guest Voice (trial by visitor)

Sunday, 16:20. My cousin laughed loud at the loaf. Double thump, the only double in the log, then relocation under the chair for the evening. Sentence: guests get the briefing now, delivered with tea: quiet voices, no reaching, let him come. It works; two briefered visits since, zero thumps, one brave sniff of a shoe. Sentencing guidelines, finalized after 14 cases: first thump of the day gets wind-down plus hay; second same-day thump gets full session end plus corner retreat (my absence, not his); guest-triggered thumps get room change for him, briefing for them. Appeals: all denied except case 4’s acquittal, which stands as precedent that the routine works when observed. The court reporter (me) notes the deeper truth the humor covers: every thump taught me a sharper ending, and endings are now so smooth that filings have slowed to one a week. The log worked itself nearly out of a job, the highest praise a joke log can earn. Still kept, still timestamped, still laughed at quietly.

Court statistics, two months: 16 filings, 13 tea- or phone-related (my manners, improvable), 2 guest-voice, 2 cold cases, 1 justified vet-room thump expunged from the record. Thump rate fell from 3 a week to 1 as the wind-down became habit, the only metric on this blog where down means winning. New filings get a full case number and a loaf photo; the archive stays open because complacency thumps loudest. Session ends, hands folded, hay placed. Court adjourned.

Public notice: the court of the rug accepts visitor filings. Three friends’ case files now cite mine as precedent, and the group chat docket grows weekly. Bring timestamps, bring loaf photos, leave loud laughter at the door.
