Seventh Birthday: Photos From The Day We Met
same angle, same light my log photo
Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

Today we celebrated seven years. I pulled the photos from the exact day we met at the start of 2020: tiny three-month-old loaf, confused, perfect. Then one from two weeks later, already ruling the room. This is the birthday page: first-day photo, today’s photo, one line per year, party notes. Personal anniversary log, not advice. Seven years of birthdays and he still binkies for parsley. Best decision of 2020 by a mile.

The two photos that start every birthday

Photo one, day one 2020: three-month-old loaf on unfamiliar tile, ears sideways with confusion, eyes enormous. Photo two, two weeks later: same tile, sprawled diagonally, already ruling the room. The pair hangs side by side in the notebook every year with the new annual photo added right: year seven’s shows a distinguished gentleman, silver at the muzzle, flop perfected. Method inherited from my nine-year comparison habit: same angle yearly, mood line beneath. Birthday wishes flooded in and the name question came up: Bugs, because he was a tiny bug of a baby in 2020. Seven years later the bug runs the house. Cutie pie status: permanent.

Seven years, seven lines

Year one: arrival and first binky. Year two: couch rights negotiated. Year three: tunnel empire founded. Year four: the great parsley era (consumption doubled, no regrets). Year five: senior naps begin, dignity intact. Year six: distinguished silver, slower zoomies. Year seven: still binkies for parsley, verified this morning, twice. Party ritual: first-day photo next to today’s photo, favourite treat plus extra greens plus one new toy (this year: willow tunnel extension, approved within the hour). One line per year read aloud; the 2020 line gets the biggest laugh (tiny bug!) and this year’s gets the applause. Compare with last month’s angelversary ceremony, same structure, different decade. Birthday page habit complete; year eight loading.

Party report: treats, toy, tears

favourite treat (parsley crown, extra-large) served at 18:00 sharp, extra greens mixed in (dandelion, the birthday luxury), new toy presented at 18:15 (willow tunnel extension, sniffed, entered, approved within the hour per the log). Guests: my wife (photographer), the resident senior (observed from the rug with veteran calm), me (crying by 18:30). The ugly-cry arrived on schedule during the year-four line (parsley era, the consumption numbers got me). Seven candles? No, one parsley candle, symbolic, consumed immediately. Presents opened: the toy (his), the compilation (mine), the extra greens (shared). Party duration 90 minutes, flop finale 19:30 sharp. Best birthday yet, per unanimous vote of attendees present and fluffy.

Seven-year stats and year-eight wishlist

By the numbers: 2,555 days together, roughly 5,000 top-ups, 400+ photos, 7 birthday pages, 1 bug-turned-king. Vet file: annual checks, all clear, senior protocol from year six (ramp installed, tile-path mat, same routine kept). Wishlist for eight: continued parsley binkies (form holding), hallway flop documented (territory expanding per recent evidence), zero vet surprises (knock wood, log honestly). The 2020 decision reviewed: best decision of 2020 by a mile, competing decisions that year included the couch (good) and the haircut (regrettable); the bug wins by orders of magnitude. Seven years handsome today; year eight, we’re ready. Bugs forever.

Birthday correspondence closed: thank-you notes sent (three, with paw-print signatures, stamp applied gently, washed after), leftover parsley distributed (residents all), toy already half-destroyed (success metric). The 2020 photo pair returns to the notebook till year eight; the 2026 portrait joins the hallway gallery (frame pending, wall space reserved). Seven candles unlit (fire code, bunny code), one parsley candle consumed. Best decision of 2020, reviewed annually, confirmed unanimously. Bugs runs the house; the house adores the arrangement. Year eight, same page, same bug.

Year-eight preview filed: same photos (day-one plus today plus the new year), same lines (seven plus one), same parsley crown (extra-large, traditional). Predictions: hallway flop photo (territory expanding per evidence), eighth binky logged before noon (form suggests early), silver spreading distinguishment (handsome accelerating). The bug’s reign enters year eight with full honors, zero challengers, infinite parsley. Meeting adjourned with a flop; minutes approved with a binky. Seven years down, forever to go. Bugs.

Seven years, seven lines, one bug king. The birthday page turns; the reign continues. Parsley for all residents tonight; extra greens for the birthday boy; new toy already claimed. 2020’s tiniest loaf became the house’s largest personality, measured in binkies per parsley, off every chart. Happy birthday, Bugs. Rule forever.

Bug reigns; diary records; parsley flows. Year eight awaits.

Archival note: the 2020 first-day photo scanned at high resolution this week (original print fading at the edges, time touches everything but the memory). Digital backup tripled: phone, notebook sleeve, cloud. The bug’s baby face preserved against all decay. Seven years kept in paper and pixels; year eight already collecting. Long live the archive; longer live the bug.
