One Year Since Gotcha Day: My Angelversary
same angle, same light my log photo
Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

One year ago today I picked up my little angel. A year and a half old now, adorable as ever. I spread a year of photos on the bed tonight and nearly cried. This is the angelversary ceremony: the ritual, the twelve-month retrospective, and the essay on what changed most. Personal anniversary log, not advice. What changed most: she runs to me now. Year one gift, better than anything wrapped.

The ritual: treat, toy, compilation

Same treat as day one (parsley bunch, the first food she ever took from me), plus one new toy (willow ball, approved within the hour). Year compilation: one photo per month laid on the bed in order, twelve frames, same blanket background by luck more than planning. One line about what changed most, written on the back of the compilation card: she runs to me now. The ceremony runs 30 minutes: photos laid, treat served, toy presented, ugly-crying permitted. Her coat got its own compliments this week and deserved them: gorgeous, glowing, flat and eepy in every photo. A year of brushing logged in the sheet. Angelversary album complete.

Month six, growing fast.

Twelve months in twelve lines

Month one: hiding, then nose. Month two: first flop in my presence. Month three: tiny loaf era, photo beloved. Month four: tunnel obsession begins. Month five: first binky witnessed live. Month six: growing fast, appetite fearless. Month seven: the great shed, brushing daily. Month eight: first lap visit (twelve minutes, historic). Month nine: coat glowing, compliments commence. Month ten: door greetings start. Month eleven: flop against my leg, routine. Month twelve: runs to me. The line that titles this post’s heart: year one gift, better than anything wrapped, arrival itself. Compare with my trust diary’s first weeks: the distance map’s 4-tiles-to-contact arc compressed here into a year. And the method behind the compilation owes everything to my photo comparison habit, same angles yearly, mood lines beneath.

What changed most: the essay

What changed most: she runs to me now. Unpack that sentence across the year. January: I crossed the room to her; she tolerated. April: parallel existence, two meters standard. July: door greetings began, the first run-to-me, logged with three stars and witnessed by my wife (squeal documented). October: lap visits routine. December: this, full sprint on key sound,.skid stop at feet, upward gaze. The direction of travel reversed completely: human-approaches-rabbit became rabbit-approaches-human, and the diary’s distance column (inherited from the trust weeks) reads like a countdown to this sentence. Runners-up for what-changed: the coat (good to glorious, brushing logged), the flop (tentative to theatrical), the appetite (careful to fearless). But the running wins, movement toward, freely chosen, daily. Year one gift, better than anything wrapped: a small animal choosing, at speed, me.

Year two loading

Traditions locked for next angelversary: same treat (parsley, original), new toy (rotating category, chew this time), compilation (one photo per month, already collecting), ugly-crying (expected, permitted). Predictions filed: flop locations expanding (hallway targeted), door greetings accelerating (skid marks anticipated), coat compliments continuing (deserved). The album shelf gains a second row; the sheet gains a second year. One year since gotcha day, a year and a half of her, a lifetime of evenings ahead. Nearly cried tonight; will probably cry next year too. Angelversary: observed, logged, beloved.

Angelversary gifts exchanged: his gift to me (the run-to-me, daily, priceless), my gift to her (willow ball, already half-gnawed), our gift to the diary (this post, 800 words of year one). Guests at the ceremony: my wife (witness, squealer), the resident senior (sniffed the compilation, approved), the camera (worked overtime). Closing tradition established: every angelversary ends with the compilation re-laid in order and one new prediction for next year. This year’s prediction: hallway flop documented (territory expanding), lap naps weekly (trajectory says so), coat somehow glossier (impossible, filed hopefully). Year one closed with running; year two opens with sprinting. Gotcha day forever.

Bedtime tonight, angelversary night: compilation restacked in order, treat crumbs swept, toy placed beside the hide (inspected overnight, approved by morning). Lights low, diary closed, year one shelved with honors. Tomorrow opens year two with the same ritual minus ceremony: photos monthly, lines brief, love constant. Gotcha day was a date; angelversary is a practice. One year down, forever to go.

Angelversary filed: ritual complete, compilation shelved, prediction logged. Year two opens quietly tomorrow, same treat schedule, same monthly photo, same running greeting (please). One year celebrated; forever underway.

One year, twelve photos, one running greeting. Angelversary complete.

Year one gift: running. Year two wish: sprinting. Gotcha forever.

Running to me, daily, forever.

Year two begins tomorrow with the same parsley bunch and the same monthly photo on the same blanket. She ran to me again tonight, and that small thunder of paws remains the finest gift in this house.
