Wooly Mammoth Season: The Fluff Check

Coat check day: he looks like a little wooly mammoth, or maybe a yak. Floppy ears out of a cloud of fur, tiny face in the middle like a secret. This is my field guide to the mammoth: identification, the fluff routine, the seasonal coat story, and the song. Personal grooming log, not coat advice, for mats, skin, or bald spots I see a vet. Winter coat means daily brushing in my house. Mammoths need maintenance.
Identification: mammoth, yak, or Appa?
Field marks: cloud of fur obscuring body lines, floppy ears emerging like flags, tiny face centered like a secret. Verdict from the house: Appa from Avatar, plus a little Ewok, the flying bison comparison won the family vote, Ewok seconded. Sweet floppy ears out of the mammoth cloud. Distinguishing from ordinary floof: the mammoth phase doubles his visual volume (measured against the hide doorway: fills it fully November through February, half the rest of the year). Duration in my records: 14 weeks, late October to early February, peak density December. The mammoth is seasonal, enormous, and temporary, enjoy accordingly.
My fluff routine (mammoth maintenance)
- Gentle brush, handful of loose fur out, soft brush daily, 5 minutes, pile photographed weekly for the record
- Check under chin and behind ears for mats, fingertips only, no pulling; anything resistant goes to the vet or groomer, never scissors at home
- Photo from the front for the fluff record, same chair, same window light, monthly; the front-view series shows the cloud inflating and deflating with the seasons
Method borrowed from my brushing log: same tools, same timer, same stop-if-he-moves rule. Winter coat means daily brushing; summer means weekly. The handful-a-day of loose fur gets weighed once a month for fun (peak: 18 grams of pure cloud in December, the yak tax, paid in full). I sang him a ridiculous song about it and he fell asleep mid-verse. Yak tax paid, in fur and in song. Mammoth naps happen exclusively on the tile flop spot, cool floor under warm coat, physics respected.
Coat science, household edition
Three winters of mammoth data, compressed: onset tracks temperature (first sub-10 night plus two weeks, every year), peak density mid-December (doorway fill test), shed onset late February (first tumbleweeds on the tile, spring’s calling card). Molt mechanics observed: hindquarters first, shoulders last, ears never (the flags fly year-round). Daily brushing in mammoth season removes the handful; skipping two days produces tumbleweeds and one memorable static-electricity incident (fur stood straight out, photo legendary). Mats found in three seasons: two behind ears (vet-removed, lesson logged), one under chin (worked loose with patience over days, never pulled). The mammoth keeps a schedule and the diary keeps the mammoth’s schedule, brushing rota on the fridge, photo first Sundays, song on request (his, by falling asleep; mine, by singing anyway).
Songbook and honors
The ridiculous song, lyrics on file: verses about mammoths, yaks, and Appa (chorus: fluff check!), performed nightly through December. Reviews: fell asleep mid-verse every time (five stars, would snore again). Honors list: fluffiest December (this one, record 18-gram day), best doorway fill (photo framed), longest shed (February marathon, three weeks). Mammoth season closes with the spring brushing amnesty (daily to weekly, celebrated). Winter coat means daily brushing; summer means remembering winter fondly. Mammoths need maintenance; diarists need mammoths. See you in October, cloud.
Mammoth emergency protocols (used twice): sudden mat found, vet call same day, removed professionally, brushed zone monitored a week. Tumbleweed ingestion watch, spring shedding pairs with extra hay (movement support per vet’s general guidance, vet consulted). Heat-spike interruption, one February warm week paused the mammoth (coat flattened, brushing eased, resumed with the cold). The protocols sit in the notebook’s back page, rarely needed, always ready. Spring amnesty details: brushing drops to weekly, handfuls shrink to pinches, song retired till October (encore demanded once in April, performed, flop achieved). The mammoth departs as it arrived: gradually, then suddenly gone one May morning. Summer sleek era: handsome, low-maintenance, missed already. Cloud season complete.
Fluff check closed for the season: doorway fill normalizing, handfuls shrinking, song retired. The mammoth shrinks daily now, doorway half-full and falling. Final honors: fluffiest season on record, zero mats, one static incident (legendary). See you in October, cloud; summer sleek, hold the fort.
Mammoth out, sleek in: the doorway shows daylight again. Brushes rest, song sleeps, tumbleweeds cease. Winter’s cloud becomes spring’s rabbit, same animal, half the volume, all the face. Fluff check complete; Appa has left the building (until October).
Cloud to rabbit and back yearly; the diary measures both. Mammoth season logged.
Yak, mammoth, Appa, Ewok: all nouns, one bunny. Fluff out.
Mammoth season: logged, brushed, sung.
Cloud season complete, fully logged.
The spring brush-out starts next week, and I have already lined up the comb, the lint roller, and a full afternoon. Beneath this mammoth cloud waits my same small bunny, ready to emerge half the volume and twice the mischief.
