Couch Time Rules Home

Azmi's note My personal log from Meknes, not vet advice. Just what I did and saw tonight.

Hi, I’m Azmi from Meknes! Couch time has rules at my home. This post is built as a rulebook: five rules I set after my first messy month, each followed by what my 10-visit test actually showed. This is my personal log, not advice. Every rabbit and every couch differs. For behavior or litter worries I contact a vet. Here: covers, timers, and my scoreboard.

Rule 1, Cover on, always, no exceptions

I lay a thick cover plus a small blanket square, only when I am sitting there. The cover is a 130 by 180 cm cotton throw over the left cushion, his cushion. The blanket square is 40 cm folded twice where he flops. Why two layers: the throw takes hay dust, the square takes the flop spot and goes to wash alone mid-week. Test result: 10 visits with cover on, zero accidents, two hay piles to shake off. 3 visits early on without cover (before the rule), one damp spot and a week of sniffing the cushion. That comparison ended the debate in my house. I wash the cover weekly at 30 degrees, no softener, and the square every three days. Photos show the same setup each time: throw diagonal, square centered, my knee at the frame edge for scale.

Rule 2, Fifteen minutes, timer on the table

Visits last fifteen minutes, then back to the corner with hay. Timer is my phone face-up on the coffee table where I can see it without moving. Why 15: at 10 minutes he is still exploring, at 15 he flops, past 20 he gets restless and starts testing the armrest edge, my notes show fidgeting starts minute 18 to 22 in 7 of 10 visits. So 15 catches the flop and skips the fidget. When the timer rings I stand, offer a hay handful at the corner, and he hops down himself most days. Forced carries happened twice in the test and both ended the next visit early, now I never lift off the couch, I lure with hay. I log each visit with cover on or off and any cleanup needed: example line 16:00-16:15 calm flop, shake only.

Rule 3, I sit first, he comes second

Only when I am sitting there, never alone on the couch, never while I cook. I sit first with tea, settle for two minutes, then open the corner gate. He comes up the ramp cushion I placed as steps (a firm floor cushion against the couch base). Hop-up time averages 3 minutes in my sheet. Days I skipped the settle-two-minutes and called him right away, hop-up stretched to 9 minutes twice. So the rule stays: human settles, rabbit decides. Friends ask how I keep the couch clean, I show the cover and the timer. Short, supervised, same blanket. No chasing onto the couch, no placing him there, all 10 test visits were voluntary hop-ups, and I note voluntary versus placed because placed visits scored worse on calm in week one trials.

Rule 4, Ramp stays, armrest is a wall

The ramp cushion never moves during the test, same spot, same angle, 30 degrees against the base. The armrest end gets a rolled towel as a bumper so the flop doesn’t slide into the gap between cushions. Twice pre-rule he wedged a foot in that gap and scrambled, no harm, but the towel went in that evening and the gap has been boring ever since. I check the towel position in the before photo each visit. After ten visits my sheet shows zero accidents when the cover is on and the visit is short. The two numbers that matter in my scoreboard: cover on 10/10 clean, timer kept 9/10 calm flops (one noisy-street day cut short at 8 minutes, still clean).

My 10-visit scoreboard

#CoverMinutesResult
1-3On15, 15, 12Flop each, shake only
4On8Street noise, hopped down, clean
5-7On + fresh square15 eachLongest flops, 20+ min stillness
8-10On15, 14, 15Calm, one hay pile visit 9

Fourteen couch photos became routine and record, same angle, throw diagonal. The habit that stuck: cover unfolded by 15:50, timer set before gate opens, square swapped Wednesdays. Total effort per visit under 5 minutes including shake-off. Short, supervised, same blanket, the rulebook’s whole system. If litter habits on the couch change suddenly, I pause couch time and review setup first, vet if it persists.

Couch photos are mine, throw diagonal and timer visible in each. Not vet advice. Supervise all couch visits.

Rule 5, Cleanup kit lives under the coffee table

Small dustpan, hand broom, spare square folded, paper bag, all in a shoebox under the coffee table, never fetched from another room. Why under the table: cleanup happens within 60 seconds of hop-down while motivation exists. My sheet timed it: kit-nearby cleanups average 2 minutes, kit-from-closet cleanups (first week) averaged 7 and were skipped twice. The skipped ones showed as hay on the cushions next day, photo proof of laziness. Wash rhythm inside the rule: throw every Sunday 30 degrees, square every Wednesday and Sunday, towel bumper monthly unless dragged (washed twice when it slid to the floor). I note wash with W and the throw has never missed a Sunday in six weeks. Total laundry from couch time: one throw plus two squares weekly, shaken daily on the balcony rail for 20 seconds.

Rule 6, Cancelled beats forced

Couch time is cancelled on noisy-street evenings, guest visits, and any day the cover is in the wash, no substitute towel, no bare cushion. Cancelled days get a mark C and the corner gets extra hay instead. Four C days in six weeks, and every one was followed by a normal-or-better visit next day. The two forced visits from week one (guests waiting, I insisted) both scored restless with armrest testing. So the rulebook ends where it started: short, supervised, same blanket, or not at all. Visits 11 to 14 since the scoreboard: 15, 15, 8 (cancelled halfway for a loud truck, still clean), 15. Fourteen visits, zero accidents, eleven flops. That is my whole system, and the timer is already set for today.
