Why Mine Live Indoors: My Balcony Rules

A scary vet bill I heard about this week settled it for me for good: my bunnies stay indoors. Parasites, heat, stray cats, too many risks outside for my small balcony setup. This post is my house charter: the week that settled it, the indoor rules, the balcony protocol, and the window seat that makes it all work. Personal house rules, not vet advice, I describe my setup and my reasoning; for housing or health questions ask a vet. Indoor bunnies, sunny window seat, everybody calm.
The week that settled it
A friend’s outdoor rabbit came home with a scary episode, emergency visit, mending now: eating, drinking, annoyed at meds, which I take as an excellent sign. Good wishes poured in all week and he is mending steadily. Costly and stressful is right, but lucky-to-have-each-other is righter, their words, adopted as my motto. That week I audited my own setup honestly: small balcony, street cats on the wall some nights, summer heat hitting 40, my work hours leaving long unsupervised stretches. Verdict: indoors permanent, balcony supervised-only. Indoor rules stay permanent, written, taped, kept.
My indoor rules (the charter)
- Balcony only with me, pen on, minutes not hours, 20-minute max, mat down, water present, my chair occupied: no solo balcony time ever
- Shoes off at the door, hay from sealed bags, street dust stays outside; storage sealed against moths and damp
- Any sneezing or scratching: vet, not guessing, the rule that replaces all internet research; symptoms get appointments, not searches
- Windows: mesh-secured, sun-monitored, the sunny seat gets shade rotation past noon, thermometer spot-checked in August

The window seat: indoors, upgraded
The charter’s compensation package: a sunny window seat with a low cushion, mesh-secured opening for breezes, and a view of the street’s pigeons (watched daily, narrated to me via thumps of excitement). Morning sun routine: seat claimed by 9:00, rotated to shade by noon automatically (she moves herself, thermostat with fur). Balcony breakfasts continue under protocol: same mat, same 20 minutes, same supervision, the best of outside with none of the risks. Result after a full season: zero incidents, zero scares, one calm household. The motto holds: costly and stressful avoided; lucky-to-have-each-other, daily. Indoor rules permanent, sunny seat occupied, everybody calm. Charter signed with a nose-print.
Balcony protocol in detail (supervised minutes)
The 20 supervised minutes, choreographed: mat down first (same washable mat, shaken), pen panels up (60 cm, clipped), water bowl placed, my chair occupied before bunny arrives (supervision starts before presence). Minutes 1-5: patrol and sniff tour. Minutes 5-15: sun sprawl or shade sit depending on season. Minutes 15-20: wind-down, hay offered, return inside together. Abort conditions: cat sighting (immediate, carrier-free carry inside, practiced), sudden wind (panels rattle, session ends), heat above 30 on the tile thermometer (morning-only rule). Monthly tally: 20 sessions, 3 aborts (2 cats, 1 wind), zero incidents. The protocol delivers outside’s joys, sun, breeze, pigeon television, with inside’s guarantees. Minutes, not hours; supervised, not solo; pen, always. The charter’s finest print, and its most-used page.
Charter review, quarterly: zero incidents, zero scares, one calm household, renewed unanimously (residents flop in approval). Amendments this quarter: thermometer added to protocol (August data), pigeon-watch officially recognized as enrichment (daily, narrated). The friend’s rabbit: fully mended, hopping, forgiven the scare he gave us all. His story built our charter; our charter keeps our peace. Indoor, sunny, supervised, calm, signed, sealed, nose-printed. Permanent.
Window-seat engineering notes, for copiers: low cushion 10 cm (hop-up easy for all ages), washable cover (fortnightly), mesh panel screwed not taped (chew-proofed after one ambitious test), thermometer strip stuck at nose height (readings logged August: peak 31 outside, 27 at seat, shade rotation validated). Pigeon television schedule: mornings busy, afternoons slow, commentary via thump reserved for exceptional flybys. Seat disputes: none, residents time-share naturally, morning shift and afternoon shift observed. Night: seat empty, all abed. The charter’s second-finest asset after the rules themselves: one sunny rectangle, mesh-guarded, cat-free, calm. Everybody’s favorite square meter.
Final charter word: the scare taught, the rules hold, the seat stays sunny. Outdoor dreams end at the mesh; indoor life begins at the cushion. Supervised minutes beat solo hours; sealed bags beat surprises; vets beat searches. The house runs calm on four rules and one sunny rectangle. Nose-print below, still damp. Permanent means permanent.
Signatures: mine (human, convinced), wife’s (human, relieved), residents’ (paw-prints, overlapping, enthusiastic). Witnesses: the pigeons (daily), the thermometer (August veteran), the mesh (unchewed, holding). Effective immediately, reviewed quarterly, loved daily. The charter hangs by the door beside the carriers, rules, carriers, sunny seat: the whole safety system in one glance. Indoors forever, sunny always. Home.
Charter sealed; kettle on. The window seat warms by nine.
Indoor bunnies, sunny seat, everybody calm, today, tomorrow, permanently. The charter holds and the house naps easy.
The window seat was warm by nine this morning, carriers stacked beside the door and the charter exactly where I pinned it. Indoors here in Meknes means sunshine without worry, and every bunny seems to agree.
